Supermajority’s Taylor Salditch on the Texas Medication Abortion Decision

Plan to Engage Women Launches Today in Several States Where Women are Suffering

New York, N.Y. – In response to Texas Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk siding with anti-choice groups in their lawsuit against the U.S. Food and Drug Administration challenging the approval of mifepristone, blocking U.S. government approval of the medication, Supermajority Interim Executive Director Taylor Salditch issued the following statement:

“With Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk’s decision to block mifepristone approval nationwide, power-hungry actors and politicians have once again proven how far they will go to take reproductive freedom away from women and all people who need abortions. The majority of people in our country support the constitutional right to safe, legal abortion, and like the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe last June, this ruling shows that anti-choice officials are willing to go against the will of the majority for political gain.

“Let me be clear: Mifepristone is a safe abortion option. For more than 20 years, millions of people in the United States have chosen to use mifepristone to safely and effectively end their pregnancies. This ruling is not about safety, but is instead a politically motivated act that is about controlling women and all people who need abortions. And, unfortunately, the effects of this decision will be far-reaching, from states where abortion is currently protected to the communities of color, rural communities, and LGBTQIA+ communities that already face major barriers to abortion access.

“The past year has shown that women—especially the young women who showed up at the voting booths in 2022 and in Wisconsin earlier this week—will not back down, and we will not allow ourselves or our health care to be pawns in the political games of anti-choice actors. Women are the most powerful voting bloc in the United States, and this a reminder of the importance of our vote: We must elect leaders at all levels of government who will prioritize and protect the full range of reproductive health care options.”
