STATEMENT FROM SUPERMAJORITY ON FREEDOM TO VOTE: JOHN LEWIS ACT

Plan to Engage Women Launches Today in Several States Where Women are Suffering

Washington, D.C. – Today, Supermajority Executive Director Amanda Brown Lierman issued the following statement:

“There’s no denying that this moment is a dark one for the freedom to vote and the future of our democracy. Senate Republicans along with two Senate Democrats who enjoy the limelight more than they do legislating, ignored the demands of millions of women on both sides of the aisle to create a democracy that works for all of us. Instead they chose to maintain the status quo of inequity and allow state after state to erect deliberate barriers to voting and silence the voices of Black, Brown, Indigenous, and young voters.

“Let me be clear, Senator Manchin and Senator Sinema standing in the way of the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act is wrong. They have chosen to follow the lead of their Republican colleagues and dark money groups, and put the very core tenets of our democracy at greater risk.

“While this is a disappointing setback, it is not a defeat. Women are the most powerful and unstoppable voting bloc in the country. We voted these elected officials into office, and we will not stop fighting until they listen to us and ensure the right to vote is protected for generations to come.”
