WASHINGTON, DC – Supermajority, a leading women’s equality organization, celebrates the recent Supreme Court ruling in the case of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, commonly known as the medication abortion case. The unanimous decision to uphold the FDA’s approval of mifepristone is a crucial victory for reproductive freedom and healthcare access for women across the nation.
The Supreme Court’s ruling reaffirms the FDA’s authority to regulate and approve medications, including those used in medication abortion. Mifepristone, often prescribed in combination with misoprostol, provides a safe and effective option for ending pregnancies in the early stages. By upholding the FDA’s decision to keep mifepristone on the market, the Court has preserved an essential healthcare option for women, ensuring they have the freedom to make decisions about their own bodies and reproductive health.
Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, Jara Butler, chief impact officer of Supermajority, issued the following statement:
“We are thrilled by the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the FDA’s approval of mifepristone. This ruling sends a powerful message that the government should not interfere with women’s healthcare decisions or restrict their access to safe and effective medications.
Access to medication abortion is essential for ensuring women are free to make the best decisions for their bodies and their futures. While we celebrate this critical ruling, we recognize the reality women are facing: It has been two years since this same Supreme Court ended the constitutional right to abortion, and across the country, women’s lives are being used as pawns in power-hungry politicians’ games.
Reproductive freedom is still on the line this year–not only in the Court, but on the ballot. Since 2022, women across the country have used their collective power to defeat dangerous abortion bans. In 2024, we will do it again. Together, we have the power to hold our leaders accountable and create a world where our bodies, and our freedoms, are truly respected.”
