Supermajority on Supreme Court Decision in Moyle v. United States: “This Ruling Is Not a Win”
The Court has given power-hungry politicians the power to continue their attempts at controlling our lives and our futures.
WASHINGTON, DC – Supermajority, a leading women’s equality organization, expresses concern about today’s Supreme Court ruling in the case of Moyle v. United States. The Court dismissed the case on procedural grounds, saying that it should not have been accepted to begin with. Though this will temporarily uphold the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) and allow doctors in Idaho to perform emergency abortions when a patient is in danger, the Court did not make a final ruling on the issue. This case will make its way back through the Courts and likely be decided after the 2024 election.
Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, Jara Butler, chief impact officer of Supermajority, issued the following statement:
“This ruling is not a win. The Supreme Court has simply delayed making a decision on an issue that holds significant implications for the safety of pregnant people in America. By refusing to make a decision based on merit, the Court has given power-hungry politicians the power to continue their attempts at controlling our lives and our futures. This is happening now all across the country, including in Texas, where a 5th Circuit ruling allowing the government to ignore EMTALA and deny life-saving abortions will continue to stand.
Healthcare decisions should be made solely between a pregnant patient and their doctor, free from political interference. Women should not be pawns in political games, and our lives should not be in the hands of politicians who do not have our best interest in mind. Yet, since the Supreme Court ended our constitutional right to abortion two years ago, we have seen politicians across states work to erode our freedoms for their own political gain.
The Court may have refused to make a decision before the 2024 election, but this fall, it’s our turn to have a say in our reproductive freedom. Over the past two years, we have already seen what the collective power of women can do: We’ve defeated dangerous abortion bans and elected leaders who are accountable to our vision for a more equal future. In 2024, we will continue to organize, and we will continue to vote until our bodies and our choices are truly respected.”
